Trip Report : By Debbie Hylek
CMSC Chicago Week; "Woodstock at Whitefish; 2020"; had 238 people from 19 Ski Clubs enjoy the week. JSC was represented by four of us; Dee Zdralevich; Rick Czimer, Pat Schmucker, and myself. Our travel day on Leap Day went smoothly; with no delays! Our Uber; Jack Warner, got us to the airport with lots of time to check in. Thanks, Jack! Dee started her Leap Day Birthday with a complimentary wine on the plane. Once we checked in our hotel, Firebrand; and got settled we continued celebrating with a complimentary bottle of champagne from the hotel! The four of us took care of the bottle; no problem! Glad we were able to enjoy her birthday with her. Happy Birthday, Dee!
Sunday, the first day to ski; was challenging for three of us. The weather was overcast but not freezing. Pat got his "skis" on the ground after 28 years and did well! We only saw him on the ground a few times. Both him and Dee rented skis so we'll blame the first day on getting used to the skis. Dee and I spent the day on the green runs; which I think we mastered. The week on skis only got better from there! Rick was fine sticking with the rest of us as he had been skiing the last 6 weeks on his own. We really appreciated that! The three of us (Dee opted out) went on the Mountain tour Tuesday morning after two days of getting our confidence back. We did mostly blue runs. Did you see my picture on the JSC Facebook page; all alone with the beautiful scenery behind me? Well, that was when I got separated from the group! Yep, lost. Good thing the only way to head was...down. I was concentrating on what I had learned in my lesson the day before; that I didn't look ahead to see where everyone went! Anyway, I took pics of a family (since I had the time) and then they got that shot of me. Lynn, from Inland Ski Club hooked up and skied with us for the rest of the week. Nice lady.
Possibly we could do a joint trip in the future with their club. The snow was mostly good all week. It was better up top and on the backside of the mountain. Temps got up to 52 degrees in town on one day! I think (well, I know) Pat is hooked! He didn't even take a day off; skiing six days. We are glad to have him back to the club and enjoyed his company through the week.
We attended the CMSC welcome party; which Dee won a $25 gift certificate from the Lodge at Whitefish. So, later in the week we enjoyed their Wednesday $10 special of
"burger and beer" and the beautiful view of Whitefish Lake and the mountains. Great burger; and, beer! We also enjoyed the CMSC lunch on the mountain (with our club picture taken) and the banquet on Thursday evening. The week's theme was "Woodstock at Whitefish; 2020". Everyone's tie-dye outfits were great! We danced to the music of the late 60's and ate a not so great dinner. They had two après ski happy hours; however, since they were held at the mountain; and we were staying in town; we opted out. We were too tired to stay till 4:00 and too tired to head back to the mountain again. We made our own fun in the Firebrand lounge. Great drink specials and appetizers!
Lodging for the group was in four separate places. The Firebrand Hotel in town, the Lodge at Whitefish (on the way to the mountain) and two places on the mountain. We were glad we were in town; easy access to the shops on mine and Dee's day off and walking distance to restaurants. CMSC and Firebrand did a great job with transportation throughout the week supplying shuttle's to the mountain and events. If we didn't want to wait for a shuttle we caught the free S.N.O.W. Bus. Easy!
Thanks to Jim B. for being our trip coordinator, Dee for being our week Trip Leader, and to CMSC for again sponsoring a great trip! Personally, a sincere shout out to RuthAnne! Sorry she had to cancel; but, thanks to her I know I still love this sport!
